Up in the Sky

Stone has been artist in residence at the World Trade Center for over ten years with a series of sky studios in its rebuilt towers to paint the view below and city beyond..

After years of painting the emptied skies over his Tribeca studio at the fringe of the Ground Zero site, Stone was invited inside. The artist’s paintings chronicling the post 9/11 Lower Manhattan streetscape and re-construction of 7 WTC, the first of the rebuilt towers, came to the attention of Silverstein Properties, the developer of the World Trade Center. He was given use of the 48th floor at 7 WTC in 2010 as 1 World Trade Center rose and the Memorial took shape in the lead up to the tenth anniversary of 9/11. He has had studios on the 67th floor of 4 WTC and now on the 71st floor of 3 WTC, 800 feet in the sky over New York City.
